Canberra winters are cold, dry and then suddenly wet. Anyone who's lived here knows the routine: frost on the car, mud at the front door, windows sealed shut for weeks at a time. What most people don't think about is what that does to their carpets over the course of a season.
After 30 years of cleaning Canberra homes, we see the same patterns every year. Here's what's actually happening to your carpets during winter - and the simple things that help.
The mud problem
Canberra's winters bring wet ground from June through to August, sometimes longer. Mud is the obvious enemy - it gets walked in from the garden, the car, the kids' sport on Saturday morning. Most people vacuum it up once dry, which gets rid of the visible surface layer. But fine clay particles work their way deep into carpet fibres where a vacuum can't reach them, building up over time and dulling the colour and texture of your carpet.
If you're noticing your carpet looks dingier than it did a year or two ago and it's not down to any specific stain, this is usually why.
Sealed windows and stale air
In summer, windows are open and air circulates. In winter, most homes are sealed up against the cold. This means less ventilation, and carpets - which are essentially giant filters for your indoor air - hold onto more dust, dander, pollen and fine particles over winter than at any other time of year.
For households with people who have asthma or allergies, this is worth thinking about. A clean carpet releases fewer particles into the air when walked on, which is a meaningful improvement in air quality especially when everyone is spending more time inside.
Carpet Steam Cleaning
Hot water extraction removes embedded dirt, bacteria and allergens - not just surface-level dust. Most Canberra homes are booked within 48 hours.

Wet footprints, damp boots left in the hall, the occasional spill that gets mopped up but not fully dried - in summer these dry out quickly. In winter, carpets stay damp longer. Persistent moisture in carpet fibres is one of the main conditions that allows mould to develop in the backing and underlay beneath the surface.
You won't necessarily see it. You might smell a faint musty odour that you can't pinpoint. If you suspect moisture has been sitting in a carpet for a while, it's worth having it professionally assessed. Catching it early is much simpler than dealing with it once it's established.
Upholstery takes a hit too
The same logic applies to your sofas and lounges. More time indoors means more time on the furniture. Skin cells, food, drinks and pet dander accumulate faster during winter, particularly on fabric sofas where you're spending your evenings. If your sofa has started smelling a bit flat or looks duller than usual, a professional clean before or after winter makes a noticeable difference.

There are two windows that work well for most Canberra homes:
- Late autumn (April to May) - before the worst of the wet and cold sets in. Carpets dry quickly in mild weather, and you're starting the long indoor season with a fresh base.
- Early spring (September to October) - once winter is over, clearing out everything winter deposited before the warmer months. Windows open again, drying is fast, and you start summer with clean carpets.
Of course, if something happens during winter - a spill, a pet accident, noticeable soiling - it's worth addressing promptly rather than waiting for spring. Most stains are easier to remove the sooner we get to them.

A note on DIY carpet cleaning in winter
Hire machines do leave carpets wetter than a professional extraction. In summer this is manageable. In winter with windows closed and low ventilation, carpets from a hire machine can take two days or more to dry fully. That extended damp period is one of the conditions that encourages mould growth. If you're going to clean your carpets during winter, professional truck-mounted extraction is the right call - faster drying, better result.
