Why Canberra Winters Are Hard on Your Carpets (and What to Do About It)

The mud problem

Canberra's winters bring wet ground from June through to August, sometimes longer. Mud is the obvious enemy - it gets walked in from the garden, the car, the kids' sport on Saturday morning. Most people vacuum it up once dry, which gets rid of the visible surface layer. But fine clay particles work their way deep into carpet fibres where a vacuum can't reach them, building up over time and dulling the colour and texture of your carpet.

Sealed windows and stale air

In summer, windows are open and air circulates. In winter, most homes are sealed up against the cold. In winter with windows closed and low ventilation, carpets from a hire machine can take two days or more to dry fully. That extended damp period is one of the conditions that encourages mould growth.
